Kante is now considered to win the prestigious 2021 Ballon d’Or ahead of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante has been ranked ahead of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in the chase of the 2021 Ballon d’Or following his outstanding performances in recent times.
The Frenchman received the man-of-the-match award in the Champions League final having inspired the Blues to glory with their 1-0 win over Manchester City.
Kante dominated the midfield during the encounter when he recovered the ball 10 times as he also won 11 duels – with four of them aerial despite his 5ft 6height.
He was also man-of-the-match in both semi-final matches against Real Madrid and now there are calls from different quarters that the 30-year-old is the best in the world.
He is now behind only two players in the bookies’ odds, Robert Lewandowski, who broke Gerd Muller’s single-season scoring record in the Bundesliga, is just ahead as the second favourite.
In first place is Kylian Mbappe, who’s been in excellent form in 2021 despite Paris Saint-Germain’s failure to defend their Ligue 1 crown.
It might be difficult for him though because he is not a flashy player and he also plays in an unglamorous position, although he did pick up the PFA Player of the Year in 2016/17 after he won the Premier League with Chelsea (having won it the previous year with Leicester).
Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo boast of 11 of the titles between themselves with the Argentine bagging six while the Portuguese have won it five times.
Since 2008, only Luka Modric in 2018 broke the stranglehold (although the award was cancelled last year due to the pandemic or Bayern Munich’s Lewandowski would likely have been recognized.
In a video, N’Golo Kante’s mother stormed the pitch to hug her son for making her proud. Twitter The French international won the man of the match award after 90 minutes as his outstanding performance on the night helped his side become champions of Europe.
